I got into dentistry because my grandfather was a dentist, and when we drove out to Pennsylvania once a year for a week to visit, I got to see his office. What fascinated me from the beginning is the little tools and all the little gadgets because I'm a gadget guy. We were there all the time meeting our cousins and he lived a nice life—I could see that even when I was young. I said, "Wow, that's kind of a ... I'm very interested in that kind of thing."
I built models when I was a kid and cast lead soldiers and painted 'em and do those kind of things. I liked the gadgets, I liked the technical part of it. I call it micromechanics because I can work on an automobile and use neat tools and it's the same kind of thing as—it’s all physics. It's the same with dentistry; you have some really neat tools and gadgets to use to accomplish what you want to do.

The reason I became a dentist is that it just was a great way to incorporate some science and some craftsmanship into something that I could turn into a career. My dad was a dentist. Even though he didn't really push me into being a dentist, I was able to see what he did and what he was able to do. It's just, a great way to make a living.
Most rewarding part of being a dentist is when you take someone that, maybe, is scared and hasn't been into an office for years, and they just need a major amount of work. You can go ahead and transform that into something that is just beautiful and life changing. Maybe it's replacing missing teeth, or getting them out of a pain that they've grown used to, or just making 'em happy, and just seeing how that changes from the beginning, when they're scared to when we're finally done, and saying, “Oh, that wasn't so bad.”
