Learn The Causes Of This Condition

Halitosis affects millions of people throughout the United States. If you are one of them, it can lead you to feel anxious, and that’s not how we want you to feel. Instead, we want to identify the cause of your bad breath so we can find a long-term solution that works for you.
Keep in mind, that halitosis can have more than one cause, and you may have a combination of the following concerns:

  • Oral hygiene habits — Let’s start with the most obvious reason someone may have bad breath. If you don’t have a good oral care routine, you are invited bacteria to grow inside your mouth. You also may be leaving food particles trapped between teeth that can cause an odor of their own.
  • Tobacco use — Smoking and/or using smokeless tobacco products undeniably affect your breath. Many smokers are aware of them even if they have become accustomed to the way their mouths taste, but that doesn’t mean other people are happy about it.
  • Untreated gum disease — One of the symptoms of periodontal disease is lingering bad breath. This is directly related to the fact that harmful bacteria cause gum infections. If left untreated, these bacteria multiply and their waste changes the smell of breath.
  • Dry mouth — The bacteria mentioned above also thrive in a drier environment. If you suffer from dry mouth frequently, bacteria are more likely to survive. Saliva helps to remove those bacteria (as well as the food particles they use for fuel) from your mouth.
  • Illnesses and infections — A variety of health issues can cause bad breath. These include some forms of cancer, metabolic disorders, and GERD among others.
  • Medications — Some medicines can cause dry mouth as a side effect. Others can break down in your body, release chemicals that cause breath odors.
