Don’t Delay When It Comes To Tooth Decay

Using conservative estimates, 9 out of 10 people will develop cavities during their lives. It’s fair to say that tooth decay will affect almost everyone you know, and that includes you.

The bacteria that cause decay and cavities live in your mouth, which is why daily brushing and flossing is so important. Bacteria are constantly multiplying, which means you need to stay on top of things to keep them under control.

When and if you do develop a cavity, our team at Van Buskirk & Krischke DDS is ready to help. We have multiple solutions to remove the decay and restore your smile. To make an appointment at our Crown Point, IN dental office, just call 219-641-3422 today.

Fix Your Cavities Sooner Rather Than Later

As we noted above, the vast majority of people will get cavities. No one wants them. Daily hygiene and regular professional dental cleanings can help you reduce your risk of tooth decay. But no one is perfect, and it’s still possible that you could develop a cavity.

When this happens, the best thing you can do is to take care of it quickly. If you notice the tell-tale darkening of a tooth or increased sensitivity, then we would encourage you to make an appointment with us as soon as you can. This can make a big difference in how simple your solution will be.

In most cases, a tooth filling is all you need to restore your smile. At our practice, we use air pressure (so no drill) to remove decay from your tooth. Many people find this to be a pain-free process. A majority of our patients need no anesthetic for this process.

After the decay is gone, we can fill your tooth with a composite resin. Like metal fillings, the resin restores the function of your tooth and provide protection against further decay. Unlike metal fillings, this resin can be polished, so it blends in with your tooth.

If the cavity is too large, it may not be possible to repair it with a filling. Likewise, if a filling has been replaced multiple times, you might want to consider another service instead. In these situations, a dental crown is often your best option.

Crowns are durable and make with materials that restore the function and appearance of your natural tooth. (It may even look better than it did before you got your cavity.) By reshaping your tooth into an abutment, it can support your crown so your smile looks and feels like the real thing.

If you don’t deal with your decay before this stage, it’s possible you could start to feel the pain of a toothache. This could indicate a tooth infection, which may call for a root canal treatment. As part of this, we will provide anesthetic to keep you pain-free during the procedure.

After the infected tissue is removed, we fill the tooth with a special material. This reduces your risk of reinfection and reinforces your tooth. At this point, you can get a crown to cap the tooth to restore its form and function.
