Keep Your Kids’ Smiles Looking Great

Try to imagine yourself many years from now looking at photos of your family. You probably hope you’ll see healthy smiles all around. It’s something you hope will bring back pleasant memories of days long past. You don’t want are reminders of tooth decay and other issues.
This month is Children’s Dental Health Month. That makes it a good time to review what you can do to help keep your family’s smiles healthy and happy.
Preventive care is the best approach, and it’s an essential part of the family dentistry we do daily at Van Buskirk & Krischke DDS. If you live in or near Crown Point, IN, we invite you to schedule your next family’s next dental checkup with us. Call 219-641-3422 today.

Good Habits Are A Great Place To Begin

Consistency is the best approach to good oral health. It’s why the American Dental Association recommends brushing and flossing every day. It’s also why the ADA encourages everyone to get regular dental cleanings and exams.
Having a routine means you are more likely to remove cavity-causing bacteria and prevent plaque and tartar buildup in your mouth. Regular checkups give us a chance to remove tartar from your teeth before decay sets in or to spot problems in the earliest stages. That’s when they are easier to treat.
By teaching your kids how to brush and floss, you are teaching them habits that will be helpful for a lifetime. By bringing them to the dentist, you can reduce anxiety about dental care, so they are more likely to get help when they need it.

Going Beyond Cleanings

Fighting tooth decay and gum infections are fundamental parts of what we do. However, they are just the start of the ways we can help your family keep smiling.
If your kids are like ours, then they probably don’t always do what you would like them to do. That includes brushing their teeth … or at least brushing their teeth correctly.
If you suspect that might happen from time to time, dental sealants can help. Sealants are a special coating that can be applied to teeth. This creates a physical barrier between bacteria and teeth, which has been proven to significantly reduce the risk of cavities.
To strengthen your family’s teeth, we recommend fluoride treatments. As a mineral, fluoride can repair minor damage before it turns to decay. It also makes healthy teeth stronger and more resistant to cavities.
If you have any athletes in your family, we also advice wearing an athletic mouthguard during practices and games. More specifically, the ADA and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard. These are more comfortable to wear, and they provide better protection against dental injuries than store-bought mouthguards. We’ll be happy to make one for each budding superstar that you know.
